Section 504 Services

  • About Section 504

The Jordan School District is committed to providing a Free and Appropriate Public Education to each student with a disability within the school district’s jurisdiction.  It is the intent of the district to ensure that students who have disabilities within the definition of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 are identified, evaluated, and provided with appropriate educational supports and services.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is an anti-discrimination statute that is designed to provide equal access to education programs, services, and activities for students with a physical or mental health disability.

When a student has a physical or mental impairment that limits a major life activity, the district is required to level the playing field for the student to prevent discrimination and provide access like typical peers. A student with a mental and/or physical impairment that is progressing in school without modifications and/ or accommodations, or with modifications and/or accommodations available to every student would be eligible for the non-discrimination protections under Section 504, but would not have a written 504 plan.
